The Yaka people (also known as the Bayaka) live in the wooded plateau and savanna areas in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo, along the Kwango and Wamba rivers. The ordinary pipe of the Yaka consists of a bamboo stem with a clay bowl. In the case of our anthropomorphic pipe bowls, clay was used to shape the male heads. The smoker places the tobacco in the bowl and inhales through the stem. The heads of the pipe bowls have pronounced noses that almost resemble a bird’s beak. This deformation of the nose is typical for statues in the Bayaka style. The chin of one figure ends in a penis, the chin of the other in a female sexual organ.
