A stream with waterfalls finds its way through a rocky forest landscape. Such more rugged landscapes focusing on the power of nature were very successful in the Netherlands during the second half of the 17th century. People were fascinated by the beauty of the unpredictability and changeability of Mother Nature. Two painters who were very successful in this type of landscapes were Jacob Isaacsz van Ruisdael and Allart van Everdingen. The former is best known for his stormy skies. His landscapes are not a direct registration of reality but dramatically composed views. The latter exerted a great influence on van Ruisdael with his Scandinavian landscapes. After a stay in Norway and Sweden, he brought impressive canvases with rocky and mountainous views and powerful waterfalls to the Netherlands. The proposed canvas is strongly in line with both artists from the Dutch Republic. He is just a little less skilled in advanced lighting control. He brings less nuance to his lighting effect and works more sparingly with light accents than van Ruisdael and van Everdingen.
