This mask is crafted from cedar, featuring eyes made of abalone shell, an elk-skin strap and human hair. The teeth are also made from abalone shells, which were once used as currency and were widely traded.
Many North American peoples view wolves as closely related to humans. According to the origin stories of some Northwest Coast tribes, their first ancestors were transformed from wolves into humans. This mythical transformation from wolf to man seems to mirror the initiation rites or coming-of-age rituals of new initiates within the community.
