Phemba, seated on a square base, the powerful crossed legs supporting the languid baby cradled at the head and body, the torso, with scarification in high relief at the chest and back, with broad rounded shoulders and neck, the head, strongly pitched forward, with downturned mouth baring filed teeth, straight nose and crescent eyes of inset glass framed by ears finely carved in a scroll motif,one pierced with a metal earring.The headdress is mitre-shaped, dark dyed and not decorated with brass nails ; aged honey brown patina.This beautiful sculpture is part of a recognized workshop, which worked at the end of the 19th century. Three varied representations of this type of motherhood statue are included in the book Fleuve Congo.Arts d'Afique Centrale by François Neyt p.320-322,fig 211-213.On the basic base, a label indicates the references of the former owner of this maternity: « Property of Anita Moore...Mayombe maternity 7,4 »The offered figure also compares closely to one in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art (see Lehuard 1989: 581, figure K 6-1-4). In addition to the tall base, the figures share the idiosyncratic qualities of an exceptionally broad neck gently sloping outward to the jawline and scrolling ears.Lehuard places the Brooklyn figure in sub-cateogory six, characterized by particularly amplified expressionistic qualities including--the pitch of the head, the shape of the mouth and rendering of the teeth, the aquiline nose and strong jawline.Yombe maternity figures were used in association with women's fertility cults. Originally they were covered with camwood powder, or tukula. Red powder was used as red is the color symbolic of life's transitions, such as birth and death.

Phemba, assise sur une base carrée, les puissantes jambes croisées soutenant le bébé languissant berçant sa tête et son corps, le torse, avec des scarifications en relief élevé sur la poitrine et le dos, avec des épaules larges et arrondies et un cou, la tête inclinée en avant avec une bouche baissée montrant des dents limées, un nez droit et des yeux en croissant en verre incrusté encadrés par des oreilles finement sculptées dans un motif de rouleau, dont l'une est percée d'une boucle d'oreille en métal. La coiffe est de forme mitre, teinte foncée et non décorée de clous en laiton ; patine brun miel vieillie. Cette belle sculpture fait partie d'un atelier reconnu, qui a travaillé à la fin du XIXe siècle. Trois représentations variées de ce type de statue de maternité sont incluses dans le livre Fleuve Congo. Arts d'Afrique Centrale par François Neyt p.320-322, fig. 211-213. Sur la base, une étiquette indique les références de l'ancien propriétaire de cette maternité : « Propriété d'Anita Moore... Maternité Mayombe 7,4 » La figure offerte est également très similaire à celle de la collection du Brooklyn Museum of Art (voir Lehuard 1989 : 581, figure K 6-1-4). En plus de la base haute, les figures partagent les qualités idiosyncratiques d'un cou exceptionnellement large s'inclinant doucement vers la ligne de la mâchoire et des oreilles enroulées. Lehuard place la figure de Brooklyn dans la sous-catégorie six, caractérisée par des qualités expressionnistes particulièrement amplifiées, notamment la position de la tête, la forme de la bouche et la représentation des dents, le nez aquilin et la forte ligne de la mâchoire. Les figures de maternité Yombe étaient utilisées en association avec des cultes de fertilité féminine. À l'origine, elles étaient recouvertes de poudre de bois de campêche ou de tukula. La poudre rouge était utilisée car le rouge est la couleur symbolique des transitions de la vie, telles que la naissance et la mort.
