Henry Kerels was born in 1896 in Brussel and died in the same city in 1956. He was a Belgian artist en graphic designer. He practiced most figurative genres: figures, portraits, genre scenes, still lives, landscapes and marines. In 1930-1931 he made a trip to Belgian-Congo which had a huge impact on his style.Around 1950 he made a surprising switch to a non-figurative style, which he kept practicing until his death. The etching shows a market scene in Congo. The colors are quite muted, yet the scene is colorful with a variety of shades. The scene gives the impression of a busy market where the sale is in full swing and both vendors and buyers are busy with their day to day lives and business. In the front of the scene there is a group of four grown-ups seemingly negotiating about the product being sold. Behind them a small child and a kneeling woman are in conversation. In the background, mainly women are standing in small groups talking to one another, carrying a child on their back or a platter on their head. The work is signed, dated and framed in the bottom corners of the etching.
