As early as the 1950s, Maessen had identified the highly original characteristics of the art of the Holo, whose history is linked to the migration of the people from Kwango, Kwilu, and Kasai. Bearing witness to the significance attributed to migratory birds among the Holo, this mask asserts itself through both its sculptural and pictorial power.
