Saint Clare of Assisi (Assisi, 1194-Assisi, 1253) founded the Poor Clares and became an abbess in 1216. Clare and the sisters of her monastic order lived a life of austerity and seclusion from the world. When Assisi was attacked by the army of the Saracens, she prayed fervently in the face of a monstrance for the safety of her monastery and the city. Eventually, the enemy withdrew without harming the city of Assisi. The stained-glass window shows Saint Clare with her radiant monstrance.
