The kings or local chiefs of the Kuba in Central Congo wore a mwaash aMbooy mask to express their royal power. This type of mask represents Woot, the founding ancestor of the Kuba. Woot occurs in all kinds of ceremonies. For example, on some occasions the masked king reenacts the founding of his kingdom and thus legitimizes his own power and rule. This mwaash aMbooy mask is made of wood, elephant skin, raffia cloth, cowrie shells, bird feathers and beads.
