The Urhobo have a distinct sculptural tradition that employ wooden figures to portray either spirits or actual mythic ancestors. The Urhodo believe that individual and collective spiritual forces exist in nature. These spirits, known as edjo, are pervasive and their powers encompass all of Urhobo life. Instrumental in founding communities, the spirits are often given human form and attributes. Male and female wooden figures representing the warrior-founder of the community and his family rank among the greatest of Urhobo artistic achievements.
They are enshrined in special buildings and maintained by elaborate hierarchy of titled priests and priestesses who serve as the spiritual leaders of their communities.
The Community Figures could be real-life size, but families alsp kept smaller Edjo Figures in the house with the same typical iconograpic features: a firm stance with his legs bent and resting on a support, muscular arms,a voluminous chest suggesting strenght,a hat reserved for warriors and a Kaolin surface patina.
