In the period that this sculpture group was carved, there was a great interest in martial art in Europe, and especially in combat training with bladed weapons. Several books on the art of fencing were published the throughout 16th century. One of the well-known titles is the “Gründtliche Beschreibung der Kunst des Fechtens” by Joachim Meyer (1570). One of these fighting men wields either a falchion (a one-handed, single-edged sword) or a Messer, both quick slashing weapons. The design of the depicted weapon is reminiscent of a machete.

The Messer was widely used in German fencing schools during the 15th C. The soldiers’ opponent is armed with a flamberge (a one-handed sword with an undulating or flame blade, popular in the Renaissance), which unfortunately has broken off. In contact with the opponent’s weapon, the flamberge emitted unpleasant vibrations, which slowed down the possibility of hitting back. The sword type, which required great strength and ability of the foot soldiers, was often used by German and Swiss mercenaries or so-called Landsknechte. The two figures seem to wear a kind of leather chest guard. Their turban-like headgear is rather remarkable. Usually, fencers were depicted bareheaded or wearing a hat or cap. The pendants offer a beautiful visual spectacle—a very rare showpiece.
