The Brussels scenographer, stage painter and costumer, Thierry Bosquet, has worked for major theatre and opera houses in Belgium and abroad. His curriculum includes a collaboration with the legendary choreographer Maurice Béjart. The two Moors with cornucopia or horns of abundance are dressed in renaissance armour with the so-called “grotesque decoration”. These fanciful masks and ornaments are inspired by the frescoes found in the palace of emperor Nero in Rome. The painting of trompe l’oeil figures on thin wooden panels has its origins in ephemeral festive architecture. For example, on the occasion of the Joyous Entry of a prince in the main cities of his territory, triumphal arches were erected, decorated with such panels. Moors were depicted to refer to the rich continent of Africa. Thierry Bosquet painted the panels with a loose, vibrant touch to create a realistic feeling from a distance.
