Ceremonial Spear with sculptured Figure at the base, Chokwe People, DRC

Ceremonial spears, such as the present one, were among the regalia of Chokwe chiefs. They were recognised symbols of social rank and status. The present ceremonial spear has a narrow lancet shaped iron tip made of local African iron. The round shaft is made of hard wood and is wrapped with a brass band and a brass wire under the iron tip. At the foot of the slightly thickening shaft is a typical Chokwe figure carved out from the same piece and dyed black. It depicts a woman with the head carved in characteristic Chokwe style, with coiffure and conspicuously protruding chin. Her bent arms are detached from the body and rest alongside; her legs slightly bent.

Les lances cérémonielles, telles que celle-ci, faisaient partie des insignes de pouvoir des chefs Chokwe. Elles étaient reconnues comme des symboles de rang social et de statut. Cette lance cérémonielle présente une pointe étroite en forme de lancette, forgée dans du fer africain local. Le manche rond, en bois dur, est orné d’une bande et d’un fil de laiton enroulés sous la pointe de fer. À la base du manche, qui s’épaissit légèrement, se trouve une figure typiquement Chokwe, sculptée dans la même pièce de bois et teintée en noir. Elle représente une femme, dont la tête est travaillée dans le style caractéristique des Chokwe, avec une coiffure élaborée et un menton proéminent. Ses bras pliés, détachés du corps, reposent le long de celui-ci, tandis que ses jambes sont légèrement fléchies.
