Lecomte, A, Lehuard, R, "Batéké: les fétiches, Paris, pp180

This nude male figure stands with his hands drawn towards his abdomen, concealed behind a substantial resin charge. Two further charges are attached to the head. Cowrie shells form the eyes, giving the face a striking gaze, while a fine beard of hair outlines the chin. A small circumcision knife and a shell hang from the neck on a leather cord. The sculpture retains an old patina of use.

Among the Téké, who live notably in present-day Republic of the Congo, certain carved figures received specially prepared substances intended to give them a protective or therapeutic function. On this example, the three surviving charges are central to both the composition and the function of the object.

Juni 2001; Privatsammlung.
