The Bariba are a small ethnic group in the geographical centre of Benin, neighboring the Yoruba, whose style is reflected in the Bariba figural pottery. The disc shape top was used as a lamp at funerals or by healers. Light was produced with balls of cotton wool dipped in karite fat which were then lit. See K.F Schaedler's Encyclopedia p.79.
