The painter of this canvas copied a composition of the Italian Baroque painter Annibale Carracci (Bologna, 1560- Rome, 1609). The original painting (oil on canvas, 170 x 225 cm) by Carracci is now preserved in the Pinacoteca di Brera. “Our artist” probably based himself on a reproduction print after the Carracci painting.

In 1610 the French publisher, François Langlois, issued this print that Francesco Brizio etched. St. John wrote down the gospel about the Samaritan woman. When Christ rested near the well of Jacob, he met a woman and asked her for some water to drink. The Samaritan lady was amazed at Christ’s request because Samaritans and Jews were hostile to one another. During their conversation, Christ talked to her about the source of eternal life, and he exposed himself as the long-awaited Messiah.
