Double Terracotta Vessel with Handle.Teke People, DRC, 20 x 19.5 x 8 cm.
This twin vessel was made by the Teke people who live on the banks of the Congo river. The vessels were primarily made by women who fired them at low temperatures. These objects were used daily to hold water etc., but some of them served in special ceremonies. In that case, they were placed in a shrine together with other items.

This fine, round, dark gray vessel depicts a complete figure which is rare.It was made by the Mangbetu People.The Mangbetu ethnic group lives deep in the center of Africa. They were famous for their hair styles and practiced Lipombo, the art of head elongation that denoted majesty and status. The people of this tribe produced a large variety of highly developed art.The smaller pots were used for more specific tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and pouring. Mangbetu pots are handmade out of clay and fired in its natural form in open fire.This pot dates to early 20th century.
