Alessandro Castelli made a name for himself as a painter of landscapes, especially from the area around Rome. Initially trained as an engraver, he worked at the Calcografia Camerale, the Vatican Printing office. Between 1860 and 1870 he traveled through England, Germany and France. His buying public included big names such as Napoleon III. The panoramic mountain landscape is bathed in southern, diffused light. Castelli opted for a classical composition with an effect of orderly harmony and serenity.
