Made from fibers, wood, beaten bark, and natural pigments, this headdress was worn during rituals organized by a secret society.Once disguises the wearer represented a spirirt.Hats of this type are extremely rare : a similar hat belongs to the British Museumbcollection ( inv. Oc,1305 )and another one to the Grassi Museum fur Volkerlunde in Leipzig (inv.Me 05314)..

Composé de fibres, de bois, d'écorce battue et de pigments naturels, cette coiffe apparaissait lors de rituels organisés par une société secrète. Une fois travesti, le porteur représentait un esprit. Extrêmement rare, F. Speiser remarque que l'on "ne connait que très peu d'exemplaires conservés au British Museum et au musée de Leipzig."
Anthony Innocent Moris, dit le père Moris, fut l'un des premiers marchands et collectionneurs d'art tribal. A sa mort en 1951, Charles Ratton immortalisa sa collection en photographiant les objets qui avaient au fur et à mesure envahi son appartement parisien. Sur l'un de ces clichés, il est possible de distinguer la coiffe du Vanuatu de la collection Bottet, posée sur le haut d'un poteau yorouba.
