The scientific interest in nature, sparked by figures such as Charles Darwin, caused people to observe and describe animals in their natural habitats. This climate was conducive to the art of taxidermy. Especially exotic birds were presented under glass domes and in display cabinets. In these glass bells and displays, the birds' natural environment was imitated by using branches, stones, flowers, seashells, and other natural elements. The stuffed and mounted birds embellished the houses of the middle- and upper-class homes. They expressed refined taste and played a role indirectly at moments of social exchange.
