Massive bracelet decorated with two typical Kongo characters and geometric patterns. The Lemba cult was the most influential institution in the northern part of Kongo country. The main distinguishing feature of the members of society, this brass bracelet, also served as an amulet and a sign of belonging to the Lemba cult.In the setting of the ancient Lemba cult in Lower Zaire, the local lineage was challenged to come to grips with the mercantile wealth of the great trade with the coast without having its egalitarian ethos shattered. This was possible through the judicious creation of alliances between lineages, which forged links across the countryside along the trade routes, and through adequate exchange and distribution within these nodes of society, thereby assuring that Lemba members could safely travel from market to market, and to the coast with their caravans.
