Lega People, DRC. Ceremonial Headdresses Collection.
The Lega People live in the Eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo. The initiation society, Bwami, forms the basis of their socio-political organization. At a certain moment the Bwami society was forbidden by the colonial authorities, because they feared organized resistance. For every grade the Bwami had an adapted headdress -the one with an Pangolin tail distinguished the highest grade. The members of the higher grades were free to adapt their headdresses according to their personal tastes-hence the enormous variety.
