Johann von Spillenberger (* 1628 in Košice - † 1679 in Engelhartszell bei Passau) numbers among the most outstanding 17th-century Baroque painters in the German-speaking area.On 19 June 1669 he became Imperial Court Painter and was ennobled.
He made many great paintings for churches and private persons, like the Stephansdom in Vienna, the castle in Stockau and Augsburg. In 1679 he fled with his family from the plague in Vienna. They were quarantined in the little village of Engelhartszell near Passau, where Johann and his wife died within days of each other. The five children survived and were raised by their grandfather Melchior Lidl.
