Scene of the Roman mythological story of the Rape of the Sabines during the Consulia (games in honour of Consus). The armour-clad Roman soldiers take struggling young women in front of a round temple with a triangular pediment and a temple entrance with festoons. Top right a young man with a helmet, sword and shield, and two other men trying to save their wives. The men were allowed to escape. Provenance: Hampel Auction 04/12/2009
