19th C. woven wicker and wood Azande War Shield, DRC.

Price €990 €

An outstanding Azande war shield for a high ranking warrior originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This finely woven wicker shield is in excellent condition with a good patina from age and use. The original large wooden handle is intact, including the wicker stitching, though it shows some signs of damage. The Azande tribe had three levels of warriors all with different types of shields with this type being the highest level called the Gbilija.
